How to Build Your First Manus Marketing Workflow


Most companies are not ready for AI agents.


The problem is not the technology. It is that many marketing teams have never documented how their work is supposed to happen.


They know how to monitor competitors, prepare campaign briefs, analyze customer feedback, and repurpose content. But the process often lives inside one marketer’s head. Sources change. Quality standards remain subjective. Exceptions are handled from memory.


AI agents expose those weaknesses before they improve them.


That is why your first Manus marketing workflow should not be an autonomous campaign engine. It should be a narrow, repeatable job with accessible information and an output that a human can verify quickly.


Competitor intelligence is a strong place to begin.


This guide shows you how to build a Manus workflow that reviews approved competitor sources, identifies material developments, verifies the evidence, and creates an internal marketing briefing. It also includes the results of a real public-source workflow run conducted for this article.


What You Are Building

The workflow has one job:

At an agreed reporting interval, review approved public sources for three competitors, identify material developments since the previous review, verify each finding, and prepare an internal briefing explaining what changed, why it may matter, and what requires human follow-up.

The cadence should match the speed of your market.


Use weekly reporting in fast-moving categories, biweekly reporting in moderately active markets, and monthly reporting in slower categories.


The workflow should never manufacture urgency to satisfy a schedule. A report stating that no material changes were found is more valuable than three weak findings added to make the document appear complete.

Do not begin with a scoring model. Begin with disqualifiers.

Your first agentic workflow should not involve:


  • High legal, regulatory, or reputational risk.

  • Sensitive customer or employee information.

  • Irreversible external actions.

  • No accountable human reviewer.


A workflow that triggers one of these conditions should not pass simply because it is frequent or valuable.


After that check, ask five questions:

  1. Can the agent reliably access the required information?

  2. Can a human verify the output?

  3. Is the result valuable enough to justify the work?

  4. Is the process consistent enough to document?

  5. Is the expected benefit large enough to justify a controlled test?


Information accessibility deserves special attention. A workflow may look ideal on paper but fail because essential pages are dynamic, blocked, paywalled, undated, or difficult to compare with earlier versions.


Manus documents that some browser-access problems may require a user to take over the browser manually, including situations involving login barriers or CAPTCHAs. Test the source list before building the full workflow. (Manus Help Center)


A weighted scorecard can help you compare several workflow ideas, but it is a comparison tool, not a scientific predictor.

Useful criteria include:

  • Business value.

  • Ease of verification.

  • Information accessibility.

  • Process consistency.

  • Input consistency.

  • Time consumed.

  • Output consistency.

  • Frequency.


A score of 89 is not inherently better than 86. The important question is whether the job is safe, accessible, verifiable, valuable, and consistent enough to test.


2. Define What Counts as a Material Change

You need a taxonomy that tells the workflow what to include and exclude.

For a B2B technology company, material changes might include:

  • A product or major feature launch.

  • A pricing or packaging change.

  • A significant positioning change.

  • A major partnership or integration.

  • A customer announcement with strategic relevance.

  • A funding, acquisition, or leadership development.

  • A hiring pattern that signals investment in a new market or capability.


Exclude:

  • Routine social posts.

  • Minor page edits.

  • Duplicate announcements.

  • Unverified rumors.

  • Old news republished during the reporting period.

  • General commentary without a competitive action.

  • Developments unrelated to your customers or category.


Your taxonomy should also define the evidence required before making a strategic interpretation.


One homepage change does not prove that a company has repositioned itself. It might reflect an SEO edit, a temporary campaign, a messaging test, or a routine rewrite.

Use stronger language only when multiple signals support the conclusion, such as:

  • Similar changes across several important pages.

  • Repeated language in executive communications.

  • Related product or partnership announcements.

  • New job postings aligned with the apparent direction.

  • Consistent messaging across multiple reporting periods.


The workflow must separate what was observed from what the marketing team infers.


3. Prepare the Essential Inputs

Your first test needs four inputs.

Competitor source list

List the approved sources for each competitor:

  • Main website.

  • Relevant product pages.

  • Pricing page.

  • Newsroom.

  • Blog.

  • Public company social profile.

  • Other primary sources relevant to your category.


Give each source an accessibility status:

  • Reliable.

  • Intermittent.

  • Manual review required.

  • Excluded.


Start with three competitors. The purpose of the first run is to diagnose the process, not maximize coverage.


Company context

Provide a concise summary of:

  • Your product category.

  • Ideal customer profile.

  • Main buying roles.

  • Priority industries.

  • Core use cases.

  • Positioning pillars.

  • Differentiators.

  • Strategic topics under review.


Without this context, the “why it matters” section will become generic.


Change taxonomy

Provide the approved categories, inclusion rules, exclusions, and evidence standards.


Report format

Define the final structure:

  1. Executive summary.

  2. Priority developments.

  3. Individual competitor findings.

  4. Supporting evidence.

  5. Confidence level.

  6. Why each development may matter.

  7. Recommended human follow-up.

  8. Sources with no material changes.

  9. Inaccessible or unverified items.


After the first run, include the previous report so the workflow can identify genuinely new developments.


4. Give Manus a Process, Not Just a Prompt

Instruct Manus to:

  2. Check every approved source.

  3. Identify developments inside that period.

  4. Apply the inclusion and exclusion rules.

  10. Complete the report format.

  11. Flag uncertainty for human review.


Each accepted finding should contain:

  • Competitor.

  • Change category.

  • Date.

  • What changed.

  • Supporting evidence.

  • Confidence level.

  • Why it may matter.

  • Alternative explanations.

  • Recommended follow-up.


The prompt also needs restrictions.


Tell the agent not to:

  • Invent evidence, dates, quotations, or announcements.

  • Present an inference as a confirmed fact.

  • Repeat an old development as new.

  • Contact an external person or company.

  • Log into an account without approval.

  • Publish or distribute the report.

  • Change an external system.


A useful completion rule is:

Complete the report only after every accessible approved source has been checked, material findings have been verified, repeated findings have been removed, and unresolved issues have been clearly flagged.

5. Define Stop Conditions

A reliable workflow must know when it cannot complete the job.

Manus should stop or flag an issue when:

  • A finding cannot be verified.

  • Its publication date is unclear.

  • Credible sources conflict.

  • The conclusion requires unsupported assumptions.

  • An important source cannot be accessed.

  • A login, purchase, message, or external action is required.


Do not force the workflow to fill the report when the evidence is weak.

The correct output may be:

No material verified developments were identified during this reporting period. Two sources require manual review because they could not be accessed reliably.

That is a successful result. It tells the truth about both the market and the workflow’s coverage.


6. Run a Controlled Test

Use:

  • Three competitors.

  • One reporting period.

  • Public sources only.

  • No customer data.

  • No automatic distribution.

  • No changes to connected systems.


The first run is not primarily a productivity test. It is an instruction test.

Look for:


  • Sources the agent skips.

  • Old news classified as current.

  • Minor changes treated as strategic.

  • Duplicate findings.

  • Missing evidence.

  • Unsupported interpretations.

  • Inconsistent classifications.

  • Incomplete report fields.


Each failure should result in a specific change to the source list, taxonomy, prompt, or report format.


Do not merely correct the final document. Correct the process that produced the error.

A Real CompetitorIntelligenceWorkflow Run


To test the framework, I ran the research process against three companies in the AI-agent market: Manus, OpenAI, and Anthropic.


The reporting period covered June 30 through July 9, 2026.

The approved source set contained nine official pages across company blogs, newsrooms, product announcements, and documentation.


The run produced:

  • Nine sources reviewed.

  • Nine sources successfully accessed.

  • Three accepted material findings.

  • One product announcement rejected as outside the defined workflow category.

  • No finding labeled “actioned,” because the report was not reviewed by an internal marketing stakeholder.


This was a real public-source research run, but it was not executed inside a Manus account. It validates the workflow design and reporting format; it is not a benchmark for Manus execution time, credit consumption, or cost.


Finding 1: Manus Introduced Branch

Competitor: Manus

Category: Workflow capability

Date: July 9, 2026


What changed: Manus introduced Branch, which allows a user to create a parallel session from an existing conversation. The new branch inherits the instructions, files, and conversation history available at the selected point while leaving the original session unchanged. Each branch then operates with an isolated copy of that context. (Manus)


Confidence: High


Why it may matter: Branch reduces the need to duplicate instructions and re-upload context when exploring multiple directions. For marketers, that could make it easier to develop several campaign concepts, positioning options, or report variants from the same approved source material without mixing the work together.

Alternative explanation: This is a workflow-management improvement, not evidence that Manus changed its overall market position.

Human follow-up: Test Branch with one campaign brief. Create separate branches for an executive angle, a technical-buyer angle, and a demand-generation angle, then compare output consistency and credit usage.


Finding 2: OpenAI Launched ChatGPT Work With GPT-5.6

Competitor: OpenAI

Category: Agentic work platform expansion

Date: July 9, 2026


What changed: OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work as an agent that can operate across connected apps and files, remain with longer projects, create finished materials, and run scheduled workflows. OpenAI’s examples include producing campaign briefs, adapting marketing assets, checking websites for changes, and generating recurring reports. The product launched alongside GPT-5.6, which OpenAI positioned for multi-step knowledge work and parallel agent coordination. (OpenAI)


Confidence: High

Why it may matter: OpenAI is competing more directly for end-to-end enterprise workflows rather than limiting ChatGPT to individual conversations and isolated outputs. Its combination of connected business tools, scheduled tasks, desktop access, finished artifacts, and governance controls overlaps with several use cases associated with general-purpose agent platforms.


Alternative explanation: A broad launch announcement does not prove that every advertised workflow will perform equally well in a specific marketing environment.

Human follow-up: Compare ChatGPT Work and Manus on the same competitor intelligence task. Measure source coverage, review time, accepted findings, maintenance effort, and cost per useful finding.


Finding 3: Anthropic Expanded the Cost-Performance Range for Agentic Work

Competitor: Anthropic

Category: Model and pricing development

Date: June 30, 2026

What changed: Anthropic introduced Claude Sonnet 5 across its plans and developer platform. The company emphasized improved performance in agentic search and computer use, along with adjustable effort levels and introductory API pricing through August 31, 2026. Anthropic also increased rate limits across Chat, Cowork, Claude Code, and the Claude Platform. (Anthropic)

Confidence: High

Why it may matter: Better cost-performance at different effort levels could make recurring agentic workflows more economical. For marketing teams, that increases the importance of measuring output quality and human cleanup rather than selecting a platform based only on its headline model price.

Alternative explanation: Benchmark and launch claims do not establish the cost or quality of a specific competitor intelligence workflow.

Human follow-up: Run the same source set and report template through each platform. Compare total operating cost rather than token or credit price alone.


Rejected Finding: GPT-Live

OpenAI also introduced GPT-Live during the reporting period. It was excluded from the final briefing because the workflow taxonomy was limited to developments directly affecting enterprise research, workflow execution, recurring monitoring, and finished marketing deliverables. A significant product release can still be irrelevant to the job the report is designed to support. (OpenAI)

That rejection matters.

Without a taxonomy, the report might have included every major AI announcement and become a general news summary. The workflow remained useful because it filtered information according to a defined marketing question.


What the Real Run Revealed

The run produced three practical lessons.

First, source coverage and finding quality are different measurements. Reviewing every approved page does not guarantee a useful report.

Second, strategic interpretation requires a higher evidence standard than factual reporting. A product launch can be reported from one authoritative announcement. A claim that a company is repositioning itself usually requires several supporting signals.

Third, accepted findings are not the same as valuable findings. The three findings were factually supported and relevant to the taxonomy, but they cannot be called useful or actioned until an actual stakeholder uses them to make a decision, update a document, investigate a risk, or change a plan.

That distinction should remain in the measurement system.


7. Evaluate Accuracy, Usefulness, and Action

A polished report is not necessarily a successful report.

Evaluate three levels of output.

Accepted findings

These findings are factually supported, relevant, and correctly formatted.

Useful findings

These findings contain information that stakeholders consider worth knowing.


Actioned findings

These findings lead to a documented decision, update, investigation, or action.

An action might include:

  • Updating a sales battlecard.

  • Adding a question to customer interviews.

  • Adjusting a campaign brief.

  • Escalating a competitor alert.

  • Investigating an overlapping claim.

  • Assigning someone to monitor a developing pattern.

A workflow can produce ten accepted findings and still create little value.

Track:

Action rate = actioned findings ÷ accepted findings

Also measure:

  • Source coverage.

  • Factual errors.

  • Duplicate findings.

  • Findings requiring revision.

  • Human review time.

  • Percentage of findings marked useful.

  • Time from competitor change to internal awareness.


8. Calculate the Real Operating Cost

The agent’s execution cost is only one part of the calculation.


Measure:

  • Employee preparation time.

  • Human review and correction time.

  • Platform usage cost.

  • Workflow maintenance time.

  • Accepted-output rate.

  • Useful-output rate.

  • Actioned-output rate.


Maintenance includes:

  • Updating source lists.

  • Repairing broken links.

  • Revising the taxonomy.

  • Adjusting prompts.

  • Maintaining the saved Skill.

  • Investigating recurring failures.

Calculate the manual process:

Manual cost per cycle = manual hours × loaded hourly employee cost

Calculate the agent-assisted process:

Agent-assisted operating cost = preparation cost + review cost + platform cost + allocated maintenance cost

Then calculate:

Cost per useful finding = agent-assisted operating cost ÷ useful findings
Cost per actioned finding = agent-assisted operating cost ÷ actioned findings

These metrics expose the hidden cost of producing accurate information that nobody uses.

A workflow that saves three hours of research but creates two hours of cleanup and maintenance has not delivered a three-hour saving.


9. Expand, Revise, or Stop

After several controlled reporting cycles, make one decision.


Expand

Expand when:

  • Findings remain accurate.

  • Source access is dependable.

  • Review time is meaningfully lower than manual research time.

  • Stakeholders mark the findings as useful.

  • Findings lead to documented decisions or actions.

  • Operating and maintenance costs remain justified.


Add only one variable at a time, such as another competitor or source type.


Revise

Revise when the report is promising but:

  • Requires excessive correction.

  • Misses important sources.

  • Produces weak interpretations.

  • Contains too much low-value information.

  • Costs more to maintain than expected.


Change the taxonomy, source list, context, prompt, cadence, or report structure and test again.


Stop

Stop when:

  • Critical factual errors persist.

  • Essential sources remain inaccessible.

  • Human cleanup eliminates the efficiency gain.

  • Stakeholders do not use the findings.

  • The workflow produces information without decisions or action.


A stopped workflow is better than an automated report that creates noise.


10. Turn the Tested Process Into a Reusable Manus Skill

Package the workflow only after it performs consistently.

Manus describes Skills as modular, file-based resources that can hold workflow instructions and supporting materials. Its current documentation says a successful workflow can be packaged as a Skill containing a core SKILL.md file and optional resources such as scripts, reference documents, and templates. For this workflow, the Skill should contain:

  • Operating instructions.

  • Change taxonomy.

  • Evidence requirements.

  • Report structure.

  • Stop conditions.

  • Quality rules.

  • Approval process.

  • One approved example.

  • Common failure patterns.


Keep changing information outside the permanent instructions:

  • Competitors.

  • Source URLs.

  • Reporting dates.

  • Market priorities.

  • Previous reports.

Assign a human owner to review the Skill, source list, and taxonomy at an agreed interval.

Saving the workflow is not the end of the work. It is the point where maintenance begins.


Conclusion

Your first Manus workflow is a test of whether your marketing process is clear enough to automate.


Give the agent a narrow job, accessible information, explicit decision rules, and a verifiable output. Then measure whether the findings are merely accepted—or actually useful and acted upon.


The objective is not to automate more marketing work.
